Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is FDA-approved and used on millions of patients around the world as a cosmetic treatment to temporarily reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It’s a purified neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles that etch lines and wrinkles into your face when you smile or squint. As these muscles relax, your skin looks softer and less wrinkled.

Where is Botox effective?

Botox is effective in treating lines and wrinkles in areas that commonly show your age, such as:

  • Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Lines between the eyebrows (frown lines, or the “11”)
  • Horizontal forehead lines

You can start having Botox injections anytime after you turn 18. Some people start Botox treatments in their 20s to relax the muscles and discourage the formation of wrinkles in the first place.

How does Botox treat hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis, can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Dr. Lee uses Botox as an effective treatment against this disorder. Botox is prescribed when you can’t find relief from prescription antiperspirants, and you’re sweating too much in the armpits.

Botox effectively calms the overactive nerves that cause you to excessively sweat excessively and soak through blouses and shirts.

What happens during a Botox treatment?

Botox treatments take only about 20 minutes. Dr. Lee determines the best place on your face for the injections, depending on where your muscles and wrinkles lie. You feel the injection as a prick, but most people find the treatment quite tolerable. If you’re afraid of the sensation, ask about using a numbing cream or ice prior to your treatment.

You don’t need to schedule downtime following Botox treatments, and there are minimal restrictions on your activity, if any at all. Dr. Lee gives you instructions during your visit.

How soon will I notice the effects of Botox and how long do they last?

The effects of Botox begin within 24-48 hours of injection. Your results last 3-4 months, after which you’ll need to come in for additional treatments to maintain your look.

When treating hyperhidrosis, the effects of Botox last from 4-14 months. The exact time frame depends on how your body reacts to the injections. You can receive additional treatments to maintain your dryness.
